Where do monsoons occur in India?

Monsoons can occur throughout the Indian subcontinent, especially within the period that ranges from June to September every year. In fact, monsoons occur throughout South East Asia, thus affecting numerous other nations alongside India, such as Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Monsoons in India start off in the south western regions of the country. This is because monsoons start as a result of warm and moist air blowing in from the south western part of the Indian Ocean when summer begins. From here, monsoons travel upwards towards the north of the country, usually reaching the north of India in something of a weakened form by the start of October.

Monsoon season is characterized by plenty of heavy rain and storms after a very long period of very dry and hot weather. It is agriculturally very important and has also been described as one of the biggest impacting factors that affects the economy of India – even being dubbed India’s ‘real finance minister’.
