Grow a No Waste Kitchen Garden – How To Regrow Scraps and Grocery Store Produce

Did you know you can regrow all kinds of plants from kitchen scraps? It’s true! Our friend Armen is helping us show you three of the easiest ones you can try right now.

Avocado

You can grow an avocado tree just from the pit! Remove the pit from the avocado, rinse it, and soak it in a bowl of water for an hour. Then stick three toothpicks in it in the shape of a triangle, and rest it on a cup of water so just the flat bottom is submerged.

Leave it in a warm and bright area, and soon it should crack open and grow roots! Change the water daily until it grows a few leaves, then transplant it into a pot with the seed resting above the soil. Read more about growing an avocado from a pit here.

Green Onions

Chop the top off your green onions one or two inches above the roots, then put the roots in a cup of shallow water. Change the water daily, and in a week or two you’ll have new green onions. You can repeat this process forever!

If you don’t want to use water, just plant your green onions in a pot of soil, and cut the tops off whenever you need them. They’ll keep growing back. Read more about regrowing green onions here.

Pineapple

Next time you have a pineapple, just twist the top off and gently remove the bottom four or five sets of leaves. Let the top air dry for about two days – this will help keep it from rotting. Then twist it an inch or so into a pot of soil and water it well.

Put it in a sunny spot and water it once a week, and before you know it it’ll sprout a stem and start to grow its own mini pineapple! To read more about growing pineapple tops, click here.
