Womens’ Education in Ancient India

Ancient India had seen many learned ladies.

Brahmavadinis were women who never married and studied Vedas and the Sadyadvahas studied Vedas till their marriages.

Katyayana has mentioned of female teachers and Panini of female students.

Ashoka’s daughter preached Buddhism and the Jain texts mentioned about the Kousambi princess Jayanti who studied religion and philosophy.

Some women composed hymns and wrote Sanskrit plays and verses. Some also excelled in music painting and art.
