Multiplying and Dividing Signed Numbers
Rules for Multiplying/Dividing:
Multiplying
- The product of two numbers with the same signs is positive.
- The product of two numbers with different signs is negative.
Examples:
(+2) x (+9) = +18
(-7) x (-8) = +56
(-5) x (+4) = -20
(+7) x (-2) = -14 - If you have a long series of multiplications of negative values, remove the negative signs in pairs.
(-2)(-3)(-1)(-1)(-5)(-1)(-2) =(2)(3)(1)(1)(5)(1)(-2) = -60
Dividing
- The quotient of two numbers with the same sign is positive.
- The quotient of two numbers with different signs is negative.
