Krishna Janmashtami – Hindu Religious Festival
Krishna Janmashtami, which is also known as Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami or simply Janmashtami is observed on the occasion of the birth of Hindu God Krishna, 8th avatar of Lord Vishnu. As per the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated on 8th day of Shravana month, which falls in between August month and September month.
Celebration: Krishna Janmashtami is observed all over India with great joy. Children sing songs concerning the life of Krishna and gather fruits from trees on the road-side. Many Hindus observe the festival by fasting. People exchange gifts on this day. At midnight, the hour when Krishna is believed to have been born, torchlight processions are taken out and the image of Krishna is carried through the streets.
The following day an earthenware pot containing either butter or money and silk is tied to it’s top. Boys on this day were dressed as Krishna and try to climb the pole or pyramid of people and win the prize, while spectators squirt water on them. This tradition is also known as Dahi Handi is celebrated many parts of the India and it becomes a major festival in Tamil Nadu. On this day eatables mainly are made of Milk and Curd as Lord Krishna is a very fond of Milk and Milk products, are produced and people eat those with love and joy.
