Importance of Ancient Coins of South India

Coins discovered in South India are largest in number. There numerous coin-vessels have been discovered also. Most of the vessels are full of Roman coins. These ancient coins play an important role in the reconstruction of ancient South Indian history. It acts as a counter proof of the evidences of history, both Indian and foreign.

The long stretch of coastal region in the Deccan was the chief center of India’s external trade. South India was the original centre of vast and extensive trade that India carried on with Roman Empire. The discovery of Roman coins bears incontestable testimony to this maritime operation.
