The 8 lavish exhibition gallery halls of Science Centre Singapore over 850 exhibits. The Centre is visited by a million visitors each year with the over 25 million visits by Science Centre Singapore’s silver jubilee in 2003. The Science Centre Singapore was a part of the National Museum of Singapore which was later carved out as a different institution to serve its own prime functions. This enabled the National Museum of Singapore to focus on its artistic and historical collections. The idea of Science Centre Singapore was first proposed in 1969, by the Science Council of Singapore. The Singapore Government was also looking for ways to promote scientific education and awareness in Singapore. The government wanted to develop and encourage the technology sector and its growth due to which the proposal of SCS seemed productive to the government.

To implement this new plan, fresh layout for the Science Centre Singapore building was being searched. The Board organised a design competition inviting entries from the architects for their designs. Raymond Woo’s design got selected and he was commissioned as the architect for the SCS building project. The project was implemented in an area of 60,000 square meters (650,000 sq ft) in Jurong East and costed approximately S$12 million. On 10 December 1977 was the official public opening of the Science Centre Singapore. It was inaugurated by Dr. Toh Chin Chye, the then Minister-in-charge of the Science Centre Board. Another major milestone in the history of this institution was when in 1987 Singapore’s first and only Omni-Theatre was established, known as OMNIMAX theatre. Constructed at an expense of $18 million, this is a spacious 276-seater theatre.

In 1999 Science Centre Singapore was renovated at a cost of $38 million increasing the exhibition space of this Centre. This gave the Centre a new entrance and open-air exhibition areas and directly linked the Omni-Theatre to the main building. In 2000 Snow City developed next to the Omni-Theatre also started attracting more visitors. This amazing recreational space creates an ambiance of a snow-laden region through its controlled temperature of −5 °C (23 °F). This was undoubtedly an exciting place for a subtropical region like Singapore, where the climate is usually hot and humid. On 7 December 2007, which was its 30th-anniversary celebration, the Centre changed its name to Science Centre Singapore (SCS).
