South Carolina Gardens – Understanding the USDA South Carolina Plant Map
At the beginning of 2012, the USDA released a new plant hardiness map which used weather data collected from stations all over the country. This weather data noted extreme winter low temperatures, which were used to formulate the hardiness zone map, along with some other factors such as elevation, proximity to a large body of water, and urban heat.
Using the South Carolina USDA plant hardiness map as a guide is a good idea when choosing plants for this region. Click on the map above to enlarge it and locate your growing zone. If you have a difficult time finding your zone, you can go to the USDA site where you can input your zip code. The western part of the state is the coolest while the southeast enjoys a very temperate winter climate. South Carolina zones include 5b through 8b.
Gardening in South Carolina offers many opportunities for a wide variety of flowers, shrubs, and trees. However, it is always best to check the growing zone for a particular plant before installing it in your garden.
