However, young Patel nurtured a desire to study in England to become a barrister and be a good one at that. To collect money for supporting his study in England, Patel, passed law exam and subsequently was called to the bar in Godhara. He was able to leave for England only at the age of 36 and got enrolled in the Inner Temple Inn, London. He completed his course in less than stipulated time and also topped the exam. Subsequently he came back to India and settled down in Ahmedabad, becoming a successful lawyer.

Sardar Patel’s first entry into public life came when he contested election for the post of Sanitation Commissioner of Ahmedabad in 1917 and won. The same year he had a meeting with Mahatma Gandhi and agreed to join Indian freedom struggle, greatly influenced by the latter’s philosophy. Since then, he didn’t look back and became a prominent leader and freedom fighter, starting his career from the state of Gujarat.
