Here’s everything I experienced on my trip right from transport, food, what to do, and what not to do, down to the most offbeat experiences I had even in the peak season!

My Best Ooty Travel Tips From An Epic Family Vacation In May

What all you must experience (and how) on your trip to Ooty:

10. Drive Slow On Ooty Roads

Drive slow on Ooty roads

I was surprised to find well-maintained roads in this part of the country. And that made driving on those curves all the more enjoyable! Though there’s also a high chance of spotting animals in this part of the Mudumalai forest, you need to make sure you drive slow on your way uphill to Ooty. This will help you ensure you don’t hit any animals crossing the road (we almost hit a Blue Bull!)

Don’t forget: To roll down the windows and enjoy the refreshingly cool breeze on your road trip!

9. Book Your Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Toy Train) Tickets Well In Advance

Book your Nilgiri Mountain Railway tickets well in advance

I thought I wouldn’t require to book a ticket online, and ended up standing in a long queue before the ticket counter an hour before the train had even arrived at the platform. If I had booked my tickets well in advance on the IRCTC website, I could have reserved myself a seat in First Class. So make sure you learn from my mistakes and follow these Ooty travel tips for a two-fold benefit: You won’t have to stand in that long queue for the ticket, and you can make sure you get the seat with the best views!

7. Trying Delicious Ooty Food During Ramadan Is A Must!

Get a taste of the amazing Ooty food during Ramadan

My family and I visited Ooty in May-end and we were met with Ramadan festivities in every corner. The best part about it was the variety of Biryani and dates we got to have wherever we went for our meals. And when we were not having a delicious bowl of Biryani, we helped ourselves to the amazing variety of Tamil cuisine in Ooty. Just make sure you do your research and list down the high-rated restaurants before starting your trip, and Ooty food will surely leave you asking for more!

6. Use Public Transport For An Easy-peasy Commute!

Getting around the town is easy-peasy

Though we had ourselves a private cab that made going around in Ooty hassle-free, we used the public Ooty transport whenever the car wasn’t available, or whenever we just felt like experiencing the town like a local! We found that Ooty has a regular and reliable state-run bus service, as well as tuk-tuks that helped us get around the town with ease. Though the bus fare was next to nil, the autowalas quoted ridiculously high prices before my mom put her pro bargain skills to use and we traveled around the town at dirt cheap rates.

5. Tea Lovers, Cover Your Face Before Entering The Tea Factory In Ooty

Tea lovers, cover your face before entering the tea factory in Ooty

While we absolutely loved the chocolate processing room (mostly because of the free chocolate tasting session!), we ended up feeling claustrophobic in the Ooty tea processing quarters. Unlike other tea factories I have visited on my tours in the past, this one had a pungent smell and we immediately rushed out when it became unbearable. We’re certain it was only because of the rain, but make sure you’re well prepared before entering this room anyhow.

4. Visit Ooty During The Monsoons And You Will Never Forget It!

I, for once, wanted to dance in the rain! Turning the landscapes greener and fresher than they already are, monsoon in Ooty only added to its charm and we were glad we didn’t miss it! If you’re wondering what this is doing in a list of Ooty travel tips, then you really need to go and see it to believe it!

3. Offbeat Places To Visit In Ooty? Well, Go To The Tea Park

54 Places To Visit In Ooty In 2022 That Are Fun And Incredibly Spectacular

It wasn’t there in our Ooty travel itinerary (or even in any Ooty tour guide for that matter) because not many people know about it. But it was the most fascinating experience on our tour other than the Ooty train ride. I felt it had been set up specially to let me tread into a picturesque tea plantation and click millions of Instagram-worthy pictures! After hours of driving by and simply looking at those pretty tea estates with a yearning to visit one, I finally got a chance to actually roam into one, pluck a tea leaf or two, and inhale the delicious aroma!

Don’t forget: To try the variety of Ooty tea flavors, including the tantalizing Masala Tea, at the tea stall inside the park!

2. Don’t miss the Ooty Flower Show (plan your holiday around it!)

Don’t miss the Ooty Flower Show

We were left wishing we had booked our trip while the Ooty Flower Show was still going on. We arrived on the final day of the 22nd Ooty Flower Show and realized we should have come sooner when we set our eyes on the remaining props and decorations. A marvelous depiction of the charming culture of Ooty, the show is an unmissable part of every traveler’s itinerary.

Pro Tip: Plan your trip around the Ooty Flower Show which happens mostly in May every year if you want to witness a splash of colors like none other!

1. Loved The Chocolates And Spices? Buy Them From Local Stores & Not Factories!

Buy Ooty chocolates and spices from local stores

The chocolates, spices, and essence we bought in the tea factory store cost us way more than what the prices the local stores quoted. Also, we found the quality and taste of handmade chocolates in these local stores in Ooty way better than those of the tea factory.

Safety Tips For Female Solo Travelers: Planning Well & Staying Alert Is The Mantra

The world is a book, and you’re not here to read just a page. Women have reached Mars, exploring the world is pretty much like working with your pinky finger. But solo travel for women is not all rosy as it looks in the pictures. There are things that will go wrong, you will meet strangers who might be looking for an opportunity to trick you, and you could lose your luggage or your money. The truth is no amount of planning can assure a 100 percent safe trip. But that’s a part of the adventure – an adventure that you must embark on!

Plan well, stick to below-given safety tips for solo female travelers, stay alert all the time and have one hell of a crazy time exploring the world on your own.

Before You Go

A woman working with a laptop and taking notes

1. Know where to go

Research about the safest places in the world for female travelers, and then lock the place. Even the safest countries in the world have a few notorious nooks. So go through the travel bloggers who have visited the place, take their advice, and read through forums to get a better picture.

2. Where you’ll stay

Woman in white enjoying her drink in a hotel balcony

Now that your destination is sorted, you need to look out for all the safest accommodations for solo women. How to know a hotel/hostel/Airbnb/resort is safe? Well, the pre-requisites are:

Location: Make sure the location of the hotel is not too secluded and IS SAFE. Also, it should be close to any of the tourist hubs in the city/country.

Security: 24-hour reception and CCTV surveillance are main things you should look for

3. Learn keywords of the local language

Google is a boon. Knowing the local language makes communication easy, and that is going to be the key to figuring out what the people around you are talking. It also makes things a hundred times easier in the case of an emergency.

Note: If you want to connect with other female travelers across the globe, visit Pink Pangea, The Travelettes, and She’s Wanderful.

4. Make friends with the locals

Social media is a great tool. Befriend a few localites online to know about the destination, culture, local markets, and so on.

5. Know your mode of transportation

A woman traveling train going past the Eiffel Tower in Paris

Because you don’t want to get stuck in a shady train coach in the middle of the night and spend the night in sheer terror! Even in the case of local travel, you’d want to be assured of the safest option of traveling.

6. Travel insurance is a MUST

This is for your security not as a female, but as a person.

7. Share your plan with your family

A man and woman planning a trip with a map

How to travel in India on a budget?

For the travelers who are running on a tight budget, make sure to keep this guide handy and save some bucks while going on spree to explore your dream destination in India.

Are you ready? Let’s start!

1. The Hacked Airfares – Cheapest Flights

Usage of Award Wallet to track credits

We always have the perception that airfares are fixed and usually expensive. Not true! Read on to find out.

  • Book Early: Always book tickets 6-8 weeks before the trip, this will always save a lot of money for you.
  • Look for last minute tickets: Last minute tickets, if available, are always cheaper. Ask for it on the airport/ air service provider’s websites and bingo you have the cheapest flight to travel.
  • Buy refundable tickets: This one always helps. If you miss your flight, cancel your plan or happen to find a cheaper last minute ticket, refund your previous one and save.
  • Don’t try to reload the same page for airfares or use incognito window: Every site tracks the number of clicks and viewers on the page. If you ask for the same fares again, they may hike the prices. Using Incognito window ensures your searches cannot be tracked and original prices are displayed.
  • Free credits can get you a free ticket: Air India is always preferred for free credits. Spicemax is offering premium seats starting for just Rs. 500. GoAir gives you free points at every go, like their Facebook page for latest discounts.Buy products from their online partners to get credits that can lead to a free ticket.
  • Flights with stoppages: Take connecting flights without any second thought, flight without stoppages are expensive.
  • Fly cheaper on: Flying on Friday, Saturday, Sunday is always a bad idea. Traveling on Tuesday, Wednesday saves a lot of bucks. Flight tickets are cheaper at odd hours of travel (early morning or late night), but it is uncomfortable.
  • New airlines are the cheapest: Follow the social networking sites of GoAir, Spicejet, Indigo, AirIndia. Spicejet has started the new innovative services which is SpiceFlex, Spicemax and Bag Out at cheaper rates. Air Asia, Air Carnival and Zav Airways which are constrained to some cities, but are new airlines that are cheaper.
  • Tracking and booking: Use Award Wallet to track credits and cheap tickets. Use Skyscanner, Kayak to compare airfares. They help you choose the airline that provides you with maximum comfort and minimum price.

2. IRCTC Platform – How To Get A Railway Ticket (For Sure)

Here are some smarter ways to break the perceptions associated with the Indian Railways. And trust me, nothing can be cheaper than this!

  • Buy general ticket for short distances: Buying tickets in general bogie is cheaper than others. If you are not a comfort freak then go for it.
  • Women and senior citizen benefits: If you are a women and traveling alone or with children then you have reserved berths and extra discounts. Senior citizens also get discounts of 40% in the fare.
  • What to do when all the seats are reserved?: Unable to find tickets to your destinations? Then you could book yourself a ticket in Waiting list— the traveler can travel in the train, but does not have a berth alloted on his name, uncomfortable but suitable for short distances. Or if it’s an overnight journey, book an RAC ticket— the traveler gets to share his berth with another traveler.
  • Tatkal tickets: If last moment flights aren’t that cheap, book yourself a tatkal ticket.

PS: It’s difficult to get a tatkal ticket for popular destinations. Refer to the hacks below to book ensure you are able to book one for yourself.
  • Using more than one system: Use  2 or 3 laptops/computers to book tickets faster. Make different accounts and try to login at exact 10:00am to hit the seats opting in tatkal zone.
  • Refreshing helps: Use refresh button again and again which will load pages very fast. Just make sure you have a fast internet connection. Using refresh button during payments is never advised.
  • Using application: IRCTC application is faster than the website, download and login before hand.
  • Using prefilled form: All are worried for seats in peak time. Prefilled form is a crack you all want to use. Use tools like Magic Autofill or Autofill IRCTC extension. Look at the video to understand the steps.

It is very important to dine like a gentleman wherever you go. One should always tip the waiters as per the country you’re traveling to and as a basic courtesy, always ask to pick up the check unless you’re invited. Splitting the bill is also a viable option but never ever ask for a separate bill. Also, do a thorough research about the cuisine that you’re going to indulge in since everything that you might want might not be available there. Usually, every country has certain food items that are banned and it is only sensible for you to know about them before you go on demanding them like it’s your hometown.

Smart Luggage Ban: Know About The New Guidelines Before You Board These Airlines

With mobile phones turning smarter with upgraded technology, the modern day world is breaking all barriers in terms of letting the travelers commute hassle-free. Post the upgradation of electronic goods, tech geeks had come up with the idea of ‘Smart Luggage’, which features travel bags that are equipped with batteries, and output ports to provide power backup for your electronic products on the go.

However, there is a bad news for the smart bags manufacturers, and people who have purchased such bags, or are planning to buy one. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) had published guidelines in 2017, pertaining to smart luggage ban. IATA had published these instructions to all the airlines that no products with lithium-ion batteries shall be allowed inside the cargo.

This is because of the fact that these lithium-ion batteries pose a serious threat of uncontrollable fire inside the aircraft hold. That is why there was a worldwide ban on putting laptops in the check-in luggage, and the same will be done with smart bags as well, as they also possess an inbuilt lithium-ion battery. While some airlines are waiting for an official confirmation from IATA over smart luggage ban, there are certain airlines that have already taken action towards implementation of these guidelines and have imposed a total ban on such bags. Here’s a list of those airlines:

  • Virgin Australia
  • Qantas
  • Delta Airlines
  • Southwest Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • Alaska Airlines
  • Jet Airways

But what about the perks that these bags provide? From charging devices, like cell phones or laptops, to GPS tracking, these bags are of great use to the travelers. So, IATA has provided leverage to an extent that only those smart bags that have removable Lithium-ion batteries can be allowed for cargo check-in.

So, if you have a flight scheduled in near future, make sure that you are not carrying a smart bag, and even if you are carrying one, make sure that it has a removable lithium-ion battery, else you might just land in trouble while checking in your luggage.
