It highlights the exciting experiences she had, the fabulous places she visited, and why she can’t wait to visit again next year!

I had planned my family vacation in Sri Lanka back in March 2019 itself as I had badly wanted to go there. Though we were a little afraid to visit a month after the unfortunate event in Sri Lanka, we decided to take our chances instead and still give this beautiful nation a visit.

Some part of me urged me to leave all the worries behind and just take that trip. And as it turned out, my instincts were right and it was the best decision I took!

Being an architect, I have always been fascinated by Sri Lanka. Its heritage sites, ancient monuments, sacred temples, and endless natural reserves had always left me with a longing to visit. And I wasn’t going to give up this chance to finally see it all!

And the best thing is, Sri Lanka had everything for every type of traveler in my family – heritage sites for me, adventure and beaches for my kids and husband, and religious places for my mother.

Is Sri Lanka Safe?

ABSOLUTELY! There’s no reason for people to fear. I can even shout this out from the mountaintops! We did not face any kind of hassle or safety concern during our entire trip. Sri Lanka is safe to visit for travelers, and just as blissful as it has always been!

We visited the Seetha Amman temple and the Hanuman Temple in Nuwara Eliya and my mom was super happy about seeing these two prominent Ramayana sites. Seetha Amman temple is where Goddess Sita was kept by her captor Raavan, and it was here that Hanuman gave her the Lord Ram’s ring.

We had to cover a distance of around 200 km each day to get from one town to another, and it was Sri Lanka’s commendable road quality that made it possible to cover that distance in the least amount of time.

pushpanjali sri lanka

Traveling in Sri Lanka wasn’t hectic at all since the journey was so smooth. The vehicle we had been given was also excellent, so my kids and my mom could get ample amounts of rest on the way. Had we been traveling in Delhi or Mumbai, we would have spent most our time on the roads owing to the traffic and poor road quality.

Buying Gems In Hikkaduwa

buying gems at moonstone gallery
buying wooden handicrafts

We bought some spices and herbs from the Spice Garden and two moonstones from the Gurusinghe Moonstone Mine in Ambalangoda, 11 km from Hikkaduwa. At the moonstone gallery, we were first shown a short movie on the whole process of extracting raw stones and then how such fine quality gems are made from those stones.

From their showroom post the movie, I purchased two blue moonstones for a nominal price of INR 3,000. Those stunning moonstones were the best memento I purchased from Sri Lanka!

Witnessing The Temple Of Tooth Relic

Upon our arrival in Kandy, the famed Temple Of Tooth Relic is the first attraction we visited. It’s the place where Lord Buddha’s tooth is kept, and there were long queues of both locals and tourist pilgrims just to get a look at it.

The temple is vast and every bit of it has something intriguing about it, the massive golden statue of Lord Buddha being one of them. With stunning architecture, paintings, and historical significance, this temple is an unmissable part of any Sri Lanka architecture tour.

Meeting Baby Elephants And Sea Turtles

Visiting the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was among the most delightful experiences on this trip for me and my kids. It was fun to watch those adorable and naughty baby elephants play around in the water and pull each other by their tails.

We also visited the Turtle Hatchery which was other soul-soothing experience for me and my family. From holding tiny baby turtles in our hands to watching a 100-year-old turtle lazying around, my kids absolutely loved their time at the hatchery.

ramboda falls

Visiting both these places also served as an enlightening experience for the family. We got to learn about the various environmental factors responsible for the diminishing numbers of turtles and how these hatcheries were playing a prominent role in saving these gentle beings. We were also made aware of how elephants are mistreated and their babies left to fend for themselves in major parts of the world, because of which sites like the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage are extremely important.

Engaging In Adventurous Watersports

Sightseeing in Sri Lanka is incomplete without indulging in a little bit of adventure. Other than spending some quality time on the beaches of Bentota, we also went for some watersports to get a taste of the adventurous side of this island paradise.

First, we went for a thrilling session of the Madhu River boat safari that took us through the thick and mysterious mangroves of this river, letting us spot various birds and mighty monitor lizards basking on tree branches.

Next, we tried some watersports in the river. My kids really enjoyed going for jet skiing and banana boat ride, and returned to the jetty with happy faces!

Sri Lanka Travel Tips

  • Sri Lankan food can be quite spicy at times. So make sure you ask the restaurant staff to mellow it down in case you’re not into spicy food.
  • There are plenty of Indian restaurants in Sri Lanka at every nook and corner. So, don’t worry about finding good Indian food, both veg and non-veg.
  • Carry dry food items like thepla, khakra, and namkeen for the road journeys.
  • Carry your passport with you at all times. If you come across a security checkpoint, cooperate with the forces and do not get agitated as these measures are in place for your own safety.
  • Get your currency exchanged at the airport itself. The rates offered at the currency exchange booths at the airport are much more reasonable as compared to the ones in the markets outside.
  • Apply for your visa online through the official Sri Lanka ETA Visa website. It’s the simplest and fastest way to get your visa and the fee is very nominal. All you have to do is enter your passport details and you get a visa within 30 minutes.
  • Visit Sri Lanka for more than just 5 days. There’s so much to see and do in Sri Lanka and 5 days are not enough.
  • You won’t face any issues of safety in Sri Lanka. So, just book that trip without hesitation!

What To Pack?

Here is a list of things that you should pack before leaving for your trip!

  • Mosquito Repellent & Sunscreen.
  • Umbrella and Rain Coat.
  • Comfortable shoes and clothes.
  • Cotton dresses, shorts and t-shirts.
  • Sarong

How To Reach Sri Lanka?

You can easily reach Sri Lanka by boarding a flight from any prominent airport in India. It will take you around 10 hours to reach Sri Lanka from India.

Our Experience With TravelTriangle

We had a great experience booking our trip with Lanka Reisen and TravelTriangle. Other than some minor communication problems a few days prior to the trip, there was nothing out of place. The agent was very cooperative and helped me throughout the trip. They were in contact on a daily basis, constantly updated me on the progress of booking, asked me what all I needed, and even took great care of us during the trip.

Even the staff of the hotels we stayed at, Ramboda Falls Hotel in Nuwara Eliya and Hikkaduwa Super Corals Beach Hotel in Bentota, were very courteous and cooperative and made every effort to ensure we had a comfortable and memorable trip. I would recommend travelers to pick these two hotels for their stay during their trip.

We made it a point to stop by at the Lanka Raisen office so that we could personally thank the staff for their services and for providing us with such an enjoyable and safe tour.

I look forward to visiting again next year to cover all the heritage sites like Anuradhapura and Sigiriya.

Common Queries We Had While Planning Our Holiday

We had quite a few doubts while we were planning our trip. Now that we’re back, we would like to answer them to help you book yours smoothly.

Is Sri Lanka safe for single female travelers?

From whatever encounters and interactions I had with the Sri Lankan people, I can say that it is definitely safe for any single female traveler to visit Sri Lanka. However, one must make sure they book a package tour from reliable sources.

How many Sri Lankan rupees can I take into the country?

One can take into Sri Lanka up to LKR 20,000 (INR 10,000/-) in Sri Lankan currency, and up to USD 15,000 (INR 35,000/-) in United States Dollar currency according to Sri Lanka’s Currency Import Regulations. I carried USD 500 on my family trip, our of which I got USD 300 converted into Sri Lankan rupees, which came out to be LKR 53,000. We ended up using only LKR 38,500 out of that on our budget Sri Lanka tour, so we got the rest of the Sri Lankan currency converted back to dollars at the airport before boarding our departing flight. Converting USD to LKR and vice versa at the airport itself is much more beneficial than doing it at currency exchange stores in the market.

Can we use Indian Rupees in Sri Lanka?

It’s advisable to convert your India Rupees (INR) to Dollars (USD) in your city itself and then convert those Dollars to Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR) on arrival at the Colombo Airport. Convert only part of the amount first. If needed, you can easily convert more USD currency that you have to LKR at any of the cities in Sri Lanka. You can carry Indian Rupees, but you can’t use it in Sri Lanka. You have to get it exchanged with the local currency upon entering the country.

Can Indian citizens get visa on arrival in Sri Lanka?

Yes, Indian nationals traveling to Sri Lanka can get Visa On Arrival. However, it is advisable to get your visa online via the official ETA Visa website of the Sri Lankan government. The process is extremely simple, cost-effective, and quick. In the online process, you generally get the approval mail within 10 minutes after successful form submission and transfer of payment. You just need to carry a single page printout with you to the airport checkpoint to be on the safer side. Getting your visa online will surely save your time at the Colombo Airport where you’d otherwise have to stand in the long queue for your Visa On Arrival.

Things To Do In 8 Days In Greece That Made Our Trip Blissful

We had an amazing time in Greece on our honeymoon, thanks to all the experiences we enjoyed having on the island. Here is an account of our 8 days Greece trip.

1. Athens – Grunge And Grace

at the airport
exploring the city
local streets of the city
exploring Athens
pre-historic monuments

While planning our trip, we wondered where to go in 8 days in Greece and so the first two days of our honeymoon trip to Europe were all about exploring Athens. We got ready, had a wonderful breakfast at the hotel and took off per our agenda. The best highlight of the day was visiting the Acropolis Museum. The exhibition space tells the story of the life on the Athenian Acropolis and consists of ruins from pre-historic times. Parthenon Gallery occupies the top floor of the museum which offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the modern Athens. Later, we went shopping down the street market in Athens and bought some souvenirs. The beautiful city makes you familiar with the history of Greece. If you are wondering where to go in 8 days in Greece, Athen should definitely be on your list of all the places to visit.

explore the city at our own pace
had a tour of the best attractions
log walking tour of the city
clicked pictures
sunset scenes

Day 4 had flavors of Mykonos written all over it. After getting ready, we had a sumptuous breakfast at our hotel and then headed for exploring the old town of Mykonos. We felt that it was the best time to visit Europe as the city was not much crowded and we got to explore the city at our own pace. Mykonos had the beauty of Greece written all over with majestic colors white and blue all over the place. We took a walking tour of the old town and experienced the vibrant culture. The streets of Mykonos and sunset scenes from Little Venice were extremely picturesque and with dusk, the nightlife started to pick up the pace, which was full of fun.

We toured the entire town of Santorini wherein we visited various places such as Monastery of Profitis Ilias, walking down a village, touring a vineyard, wine tasting, visiting the Red Beach, bathing at the Black Beach and watching the sunset at Oia. On our Santorini Island honeymoon or as we like to call it, we had the chance to visit the homes of some local people as well who were celebrating Easter and we joined the festivities. During the night, we took a walk down the streets of town Fira and enjoyed a wonderful dinner. It was a day full of exploring the beauty of Santorini and the entire day was a highlight in itself. Food In Greece

Both, me and my wife are vegetarians, so a bit of hassle was expected with Pork and Lamb being the main food of Greece. However, we didn’t have many challenges and found the dairy products to be very good as Greece is famous for same. We had good vegetarian breakfast options as well in all the hotels we stayed so it wasn’t much of an issue. Taste of Greek food is predominantly sweet and not spice dominant as the case with Indian food.

About Greek People And Their Hospitality

During our Greece 8 days tour, we went to Athens, Mykonos & Santorini. The people in Greece were very friendly and helpful. With tourism being one of the major modes of income in Greece, people there understand the value of tourists and treat them very well. We were very impressed with the hospitality of all the hotels we stayed in at all three locations, especially Mykonos Princess Hotel, where the staff was very friendly and helpful.

Getting Around Greece

There is no dearth of public transportation options in Greece and thus getting around in this country is quite easy. Here are some of the transportation ways that you can opt for:

Buses(Ktel): One of the most preferred and popular ways of traveling in Greece is via Ktel buses that are green in color. These buses connect Athems to several other towns in Greece and their tickets can be bought just before the trip.

Trains: The rail network in Greece is strong and thus traveling via trains is easy and affordable. One of the most popular routes is from Athens to Thessaloniki that is opted by several people.

Subway: In Greece, you will find the subway system only in Athens. Tickets are valid for 70 minutes and can be easily bought for 1.20 Euro. This is one of the easiest and safest ways to travel in Athens.

Taxis: Taxis are easy to find in any part of Greece. You will see a number of taxis outside train stations, airports, and tourist spots. It is one of the cheapest options to opt for if you are traveling for a small distance. However, the rates double up between midnight and 5 in the morning.

Ferries: Another way to travel around Greece is via ferries as they take to almost any island in the country. A lot of locals travel via ferries so you might experience some crowd there. So, you can opt for hydrofoils where you can reserve a seat and traverse in the waters easily.

What To Pack For A Greece 8 Days Trip

If you want to know what to pack for 8 days trip in Greece then you need not worry because we are sharing our experience with you. Since we planned our trip to Greece in the month of April, we packed both warm and cool clothes that helped us a lot. In the morning, we wore summer clothes like loose shirts and dresses while at night the temperature used to dip a little bit when we took out our jackets. So, both kinds of clothes helped us on our trip. We would recommend you to do the same. Also, there was no chance of rain but to be on the safer side we packed an umbrella. Apart from clothes, you must make a checklist of all your vital documents that you are planning to carry so that you don’t miss out on anything important.

Some Europe Travel Tips Before You Set Off On Your Honeymoon

Here are some useful tips for Greece 8 days tour that we would like to pass on to fellow travelers to have a hassle-free experience.

  • Do not spend the majority of the time in Athens (if you are not a huge fan of history), if you are then visiting the archeological site of Acropolis is a great option.
  • We stayed at Mykonos Princess hotel in Mykonos and I can say it is one of the best properties we have stayed in till date along with the hospitality of the staff, in case it falls within your budget, please stay at Mykonos Princess hotel.
  • Please take ferry rides from Athens to Mykonos / Santorini, the experience is well worthy along with the magnificent clean waters of the sea.
  • For Santorini, please enjoy the beautiful sunset at Oia, take a walk down the beautiful streets of villages, visit Volcano and bathe in the clean waters of the black beach if you are willing to spend 8 days in Greece.
  • Please note that taxis in Athens operate according to meter, however in Mykonos and Santorini, they charge a flat price basis upon your destination. So, please be careful about that. Also, taxi drivers do not accept card payments, so please carry necessary cash for the same.

Why Planning An Assam Family Tour Turned Out To Be The Best Decision For All Of Us!

Assam is a place that has beautiful picturesque landscapes, lush greenery, spiritual ambience and very warm and welcoming locals. The land of many wildlife reserves and home to one-horned rhino, Assam is not just about beautiful tourist spots and that is all we wanted. We decided for an Assam family tour considering all this. With a river island at Majuli and the oldest temple in India, Assam should be on every traveler’s list. While Sarat was looking for a relaxing escapade with his family he felt nothing can beat the paradisiacal views of the tea gardens and lush greenery of Assam. Read along to know more about how he had the most surreal experience at this serene land of North-east.

I and my family are people who love hills and destinations which offer a variety of places to explore and are adorned with lush green landscapes and amazing weather all around the year. Assam ticks all those points and offered much more. The trip to the beautiful state gave us a much-needed break from the regular, monotonous life and offered us to be in direct contact with nature and be at leisure. Our family tour to Assam was everything we wanted it to be and much more. The locals were very friendly and helpful in most of the places. Thanks to TravelTriangle for the meticulous planning and taking care of everything that we wanted our trip to be. Things We Did That Made Our Assam Family Tour Epic & A Memorable One

Here are some of the best things to do in Assam which made our family tour worth a memory. From amazing sightseeing to wandering around amidst the wildlife, there was a lot to do.

1.Arrival and Visit To Barapani

Our trip kick-started with us marveling along the scenic route on our way to leisure time at the Sai Mi Ka Resort. We took an incredibly scenic route with water rolling down from the roadside mountains, the aroma of pine trees, lush green vegetation and orchid flowers to reach the ‘Scotland of the East’ – Shillong. Enroute we visit Barapani, Umiam Lake or Barapani – is the biggest artificial lake in Meghalaya, a majestic placid lake surrounded by Sylvan hills.

2.Trek To Double Decker Bridge

Post a hearty breakfast, we headed to explore the local sights of Cherraapunji and man! It is one hell of a place! We then headed to trek the Double Decker Bridge. Please note that this trek has 3700 steps on each side and we took 7 hours to complete it but once we reached where we had started for, we felt it was all worth it. We also looked for things to buy in Assam and bought souvenirs.

We started our day by visiting the Seven Sisters falls and then Mawsmai cave which was exceptionally beautiful. We then spent the evening in Cherrapunji. And then headed to Dawki. Dawki – the town at the India-Bangladesh border is known for Suspension bridge above the Umngot river. The suspension bridge was constructed during the British rule. We enjoyed the country boat ride in the Umngot river. The specialty of the Umngot river is that – the water is crystal clear and you can see through it which made our Meghalaya family tour an epic experience.

4.Excursion To Mawsynram

Shopping In Sri Lanka – Ayurvedic Products, Spices, Gems & More

If one starts writing down all the things to buy in Sri Lanka, the list will never end. This place is a wonderland for shopaholics like us! We used to lose track of time whenever we set foot inside a market or mall. We ended up buying a variety of products like Sri Lankan herbs and spices and Sri Lankan tea.

The medium sized packets of spices like cinnamon powder and cinnamon sticks that we had bought cost us around INR 800/- per packet in the big cities like Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. Later, we figured that the same spices would have cost us not more than INR 250-300 per packet in smaller remote areas falling on the way.

When we were in Nuwara Eliya, we bought various authentic Ayurvedic products like creams, oils, and lotions from a spice garden. They were a little expensive (INR 1,500 per product), but the superior quality surely made up for it.

I loved the beaches of Sri Lanka, especially the ones in Bentota. While we were these, trodding over that soft, warm sand and looking over the pretty sunsets while sitting on those golden shores used to be the most relaxing thing after a tiring day. If you’re looking for a peaceful and secluded avenue in Bentota, the beaches are the right places to head to.

Stroll, swim, jet ski, or simply get tanned on the sands – you can do whatever you feel like on those beautiful (and mostly secluded!) beaches of Bentota. Another great thing here is that most of the hotels are located right next to the shores, which means all you have to do is pick up a towel and a pair of slippers and walk right down to the beach whenever you feel like.

We had spent an entire day simply relaxing on the private beach of our hotel without a worry in the world, and I feel it’s the most fun and exciting thing to do for water babies celebrating bachelorette parties in Sri Lanka.

A Sojourn In Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya is among the most delightful places to visit in Sri Lanka with friends. Calm, beautiful, and absolutely serene, it’s the perfect kind of place for a mountain and tea lover to explore. We were surrounded by refreshing green foliage no matter which direction we turned our heads to. And the aroma of fresh tea in the air was calling out to “chai” addict in me!

It’s now one of my favorite places since I’m a total nature baby and I loved both the natural and historical aspects of this lush paradise. I and the girls even went cycling by the Gregory Lake which was a truly special moment for us! I would totally want to go back to this haven someday!

Other than nature, one should also not miss out the temples and history of this place. A visit to the Seetha Amman Temple and the Seetha Eliya was both intriguing and soul-soothing at the same time. Even the visit to the Tea Factory was a very knowledgeable experience where we got a tour of the whole tea-making process.

The hill station of Nuwara Eliya provides as a great respite from the otherwise hot and humid weather of Sri Lanka. The weather here is always cool and soothing. In fact, the temperature had even dropped to 12 degree Celcius during the night when we were here, even in the month of April.

Sri Lanka Travel Tips

  • If you’re a vegetarian, make sure you do prior research and make a list of good vegetarian restaurants in Sri Lanka before actually setting off on your trip.
  • Sri Lanka has many more charming places in addition to Bentota and Nuwara Eliya. Have more days at hand so that you can check some out of those out as well.

Frequently Asked Questions About Is Sri Lanka Safe For Female Travelers

We had so many doubts while planning this trip. And now after coming back from it, we feel we are ready to answer them for other travelers out there.

Which is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

You can visit Sri Lanka any time of the year but is advised you avoid the monsoon season since that may restrict your outings a little bit. Other than that, winters and summers would prove to be a great time to go there. One should also note that the peak tourist season in Sri Lanka is from October to April.

How do you get around in Sri Lanka?

While booking our trip, we had hired a car for the 6 days duration that we were there. You can also do the same if you’re going for a package tour (which is anyway a great and economical option). If you’re not interested in traveling via road, you can consider commuting by trains which will be enriched with beautiful sceneries and will prove to be quite adventurous.

Almost all major cities in Sri Lanka like Colombo, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee, Ella, Badulla, Galle, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and more are connected via a well laid out railway network with frequent train traffic. You can easily book tickets on their official website before or during your trip, and it’s super cheap.

Why should you visit Sri Lanka?

It’s one of those very few places in the world that offers some of the most diverse landscapes ranging from rainforests, hills, beaches, mangroves, lakes, with a hearty combination of historical landmarks, Buddhist temples, cultural locales, and ruins. And the best part – you don’t have to go very far to witness them all since Sri Lanka is a very small country and all its cities, towns, and villages are located very close to each other.

In terms of expenditure, Sri Lanka is pretty affordable as compared to many other third world countries. An exotic tropical island nation blessed with nature’s bounty in abundance, Sri Lanka is loved the world over by all nature lovers, hopeless romantics, peace seekers, history geeks, and camera wielders.

What should I buy in Sri Lanka?

You should definitely buy spices, herbs, and Ayurvedic products from authentic Government certified stores. You should also buy tea and/or tea leaves and cinnamon. And if you are fond of jewelry, you should head to Government certified showrooms like Hemchandras in Kandy for buying ornaments made out of precious stones and gems which are very popular in Sri Lanka.

Is it safe to walk around in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is a safe country, especially the populated and popular places like Colombo, Kandy, Bentota, Nuwara Eliya. One is least likely to face any sort of safety concern or menace during their tour. However, one should always take some basic safety precautions while visiting any destination on the planet. No matter where you are, it isn’t advised to roam the streets late in the night especially if you’re all by yourself, upset religious sentiments or traditions, disrespect locals, or break the rules and laws set down the respective government.

Is Sri Lanka safe for solo female travelers?

In light of the recent unfortunate events in Sri Lanka, people often wonder “Is Sri Lanka safe for single female travelers?”. The answer is YES! Sri Lanka is absolutely safe and will make for a great destination for a solo trip!

Is Sri Lanka expensive?

In terms of the currency conversion rate, Sri Lanka is quite economical for Indian travelers. Things like entry tickets to major attractions, consumer goods, and cab fares in Sri Lanka are moderately priced.
