Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2022: Celebrating Meat Abstinence With Extreme Rituals

Travel buffs with curious minds are often guided to a gamut of celebrations and festivals that occur in cities and islands across the world. Each one of them has their share of exuberance and enigma; all having unique attractions that allure tourists from everywhere. One such breathtaking festival is the Phuket Vegetarian Festival which has a lot more to offer than just the vegetarian fare (as the name suggests). So, if you are geared up to see the extraordinary, then you are in the right place and at the right time as this vegetarian food festival has it all to leave you wide-eyed and enthralled.

About Phuket Vegetarian Festival

About Phuket Vegetarian Festival

While Phuket has a spectrum of festivals being celebrated by the aboriginals, one of the prime one which you should attend is the Vegetarian Festival In Thailand 2022. This festival usually occurs around the ninth month of the lunar calendar followed by the Chinese. It is an annual affair that goes on for a few days and is celebrated in the honor of Nine Emperor Gods, by the Chinese community essentially. Occurring in and around the month of September or October, this festival attracts the natives as well as the foreigners who come to this island to witness, all that they have only read or heard about.

This name of this vegetarian food festival can be misleading as more than a visual delight of a vegetarian food galore, it is all about abstaining from non-vegetarian foods like meat etc. and also about offering unnerving rituals that involve gory body piercing, and self-mutilating practices to express their obeisance to their almighty Gods.

Origin Of The Phuket Vegetarian Festival, Thailand

Blood on the body

While there are several theories and stories regarding its existence, the most credible one of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival history is that it was initiated by a bunch of Chinese Opera wanderers in the 19th century. When they were riddled by Malaria ( it was a fatal disease then ) and were succumbing to it, the survivors took to a rigorous vegetarian diet as a form of worship and prayed ardently for a complete recovery with blessings for good health to the Nine Emperor God. Lo, behold! Their prayers were answered. So when they were completely healed, they held massive celebrations as an expression of gratitude to the Gods and to honor them with utmost reverence. These celebrations were repeated thereafter year after year, during the same period and were soon heralded as a prominent festival in Phuket. Ever since it has been expanding and shaping up into a remarkable annual occasion that is gaining popularity with people participating from all parts of the world especially Asia.

This festival is celebrated on the roads in the form of mammoth processions that have all the participants displaying their endurance of pain by piercing and self-mutilating their bodies in various ways using razor-sharp weapons like blades, swords, iron rods and so on to name a few. It goes on for approximately 9 days and the processions proceed from one shine to another throughout the town.

This vegetarian festival begins with an opening ceremony, while the first and the most important ceremonies are the Lantern Pole Raising ceremony. Tourists from all around the world especially come to attend the Phuket Vegetarian festival parade. A schedule of all these including invocation ceremony, fire walking ceremony and other important ones too like bladder ladder climbing, children’s wrist tying, fire walking, oil bathing, etc. are always available for the spectators and visitors. These details and the schedules of the procession and other activities are mostly accurate.

Important things

The most spectacular thing to note about this festival is that though it is a festival wherein the participants are dressed in white, yet it spreads an aura of colorfulness. Here, more than the fun and frolic, there is a lot of reverence wherein celebrations involve tolerance of pain than pleasure.

A word of caution for all the vegetarians who are drawn to this festival. Please fasten your seat belts and muster your courage to witness the bloodshed and bewildering scenarios that involve incredible skin piercings, fire walking, etc. The Astonishing sights of burning coal and walking on it barefoot, tongue slashing, and other extremities that the participants perform leave even the brave heart spectators baffled and gasping for breath.

All the piercings and other mutilations occur under the expert guidance of medical staff that is already present in the temples. This vegetarian festival in Phuket, Thailand is one of the most revered festivals in South East Asia attracts not only participants from all over Asia but also a bevy of tourists who have the mettle to see it all and take it in their stride.

Performing in this festival is the expression of the devoutness of the religious minded Chinese and South East Asians, who can go to any extreme to demonstrate their reverence. When they participate in fire walking or ladder climbing or piercing with weapons like knives, razors, guns, etc. they ensure that these performances are carried out without the use of anesthesia or analgesics. It is their endurance of the pain occurring from these gory practices that enact as offerings to their deities.

The bachelors and spinsters who participate in this festival are known as Masong. These people are under a stupor as they perform the treacherous acts and are bound by stringent commitments wherein they not only avoid meat but also alcohol. Another necessity for performing this act requires the masong to maintain utmost purification, that includes both mind body and soul. They are instructed to dress in pristine white or yellow and often assisted by volunteers who help them and support them to dress wounds or carry out the act of piercing etc. Amongst devotees, those who are pregnant or menstruating are not allowed to participate or volunteer in this festival.

Jaswanth’s 5N/6D Adventure Trip to Sri Lanka Will Make You Fall In Love With The Emerald Island

Often beauty lies in noticing the smaller things in life that you take for granted. Read Jaswanth’s account of an adventure trip to Sri Lanka with two of his friends as they discover the everlasting beauty of the Emerald Island not through the man-made marvels but through the precious gifts of mother nature. They booked a 5 nights/6 day package via TravelTriangle for INR 42000 which included their transfers, accommodation, and breakfast.

Creative art at it's best in Sri Lanka

My friends and I wanted to go on a vacation on a medium budget and we were looking for destination nearby India to travel to. After considering the love for nature and cost into consideration, we decided on Sri Lanka.

I had been following the TravelTriangle website and mobile application for almost a year now and I knew that I would be provided with an option to customize my own package and choose my own agent all at the most competitive price in the marketplace. Soon, we booked a package with “ Udani Holidays” as soon we got our required configuration for our vacation.

Capturing a rare moment in Sri Lanka

The excitement of three long time friends meeting in Hyderabad from 3 different cities (our starting point) was a nice start to our vacation. We took a late night flight to Chennai, stayed there for the night to wait for our flight to Sri Lanka.

Here’s the 5 nights/ 6 days Sri Lanka trip itinerary we followed:

Day 1: Arriving in Sri Lanka

  • Souvenirs at Pinnavala Elephant Resort
  • Elephants at Pinnavala Elephant Resort
  • Taking pictures at Pinnavala
  • Elephants being given a bath
  • Pinnavala Elephant Resort
  • Off for a stroll at Pinnavala Resort
  • Brilliant elephant model at Pinnavala
  • Elephants helping each other

We boarded our flight from Chennai at 5am and arrived in Colombo at 7.30am. Upon our arrival, a cab was waiting for us at the airport which was booked through the travel agency. We directly headed towards the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala.

The car provided to us was very spacious and comfortable. The driver also had a fair knowledge of the country and acted as a guide for us.

The elephant orphanage was a very special place. One of the largest in the world, it gave us a chance to meet, greet and feed baby elephants inside the park. The huge and majestic creature is a national symbol of pride for Sri Lanka. After spending some time with the elephants, we headed towards the spice gardens which were 40km from the orphanage.

After seeing the various spices cultivated in Sri Lanka, we headed towards our final destination for the day- Kandy. We checked into the hotel and rested for a while. In the evening, we moved out on our own to get a feel of the city and how the people are. We returned to the hotel in a few hours and retired for the night.

Day 2: Kandy and travel to Nuwara Eliya

  • Brilliant home stays in Sri Lanka
  • bird spotting near kandy
  • Farms near Nuwara Eliya
  • Sri Lanka
  • Beautiful tea plantations near Kandy
  • Mackwoods near Nuwara Eliya
  • Beautiful view of tea plantations
  • Picking Tea leaves in Sri Lanka

There were a few things that were impressive about the city of Kandy. Firstly, the traffic in the city was smoothly managed without any traffic signals. People in the city were very calm and organized. Secondly, the city is a Buddhist-dominated place which gives the city a very soothing vibe when you are roaming around. We had breakfast and checked out from the hotel in Kandy. On our way out, we decided to visit the famous Buddhist Tooth Relic Temple.

Our next destination was Nuwara Eliya. It took us around 7 hours to cover the 150 km between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. The traveling between two destinations via road in Sri Lanka always takes a little longer than usual owing to the terrain and the single-lane highways. On our way to Nuwara Eliya we passed many tea gardens where we stopped a few times to get pictures clicked.

We finally reached Nuwara Eliya and checked into the cottage we had booked. We had also organized for a cook, who could prepare a nice dinner for us. Indeed, the dinner was very delicious. With a full belly, we slept for the night in the expectation of another wonderful day in Sri Lanka.

Day 3: Traveling to Bentota

  • beautiful sunset in Bentota
  • Beautiful terrain in Nuwara Eliya
  • Early morning mist in Nuwara Eliya
  • Bridge on the way to bentota
  • Panoramic view of Nuwara Eliya
  • Jaswant taking pictures in Pinnawala
  • En route Bentota
  • Crossing by elephants in Bentota

We woke up before sunrise to click some pictures early in the morning. As it turned out, it was a very foggy morning with the sun hiding behind the clouds. Nevertheless, we got our camera out and clicked some pictures of the beautiful landscape of Nuwara Eliya around the Gregory Lake.

After clicking some pictures, we headed back to the hotel and checked out. After checking out, we visited a Hindu temple which is dedicated to Lord Ram. I felt really blessed to visit one of the holy temples on the Ramayana trail. Our next stop was Bentota, which was 170km towards the south. On our way to Bentota, we saw a lovely waterfall and clicked some pictures over there.

After yet another tiring 8-hour journey, we finally arrived in Bentota. We arrived in the city around sunset. It gave us an opportunity to catch the sunset over a beautiful coastline which had some ferocious waves at that time. We checked into the hotel in Bentota, relaxed for a bit in the swimming pool and called it a day.

Day 4: Madu River Cruise

  • gorgeous waterfall near bentota
  • Turtle hatchery near colombo
  • Madu river cruise in Sri Lanka
  • Ramayana trail temple in Sri Lanka
  • Taking pictures near a small waterfall in Bentota
  • moonstone is Sri Lanka
  • rare gems in Sri Lanka
  • a rare turtle species in Sri Lanka

We got up the next day and went for an early morning dip in the ocean. After coming back from the beach, we had a delicious breakfast and checked out of the hotel. We headed towards the Amarasena Turtle Hatchery where we saw the rarest species of turtles in the world.

Next up, we had planned a boat cruise on the Madu river wetlands. It is a cruise that takes you across the wetlands consisting of 21 islands. A few of the interesting islands we visited were the Cinnamon Island and Vishnu Temple Island. As we were finishing the tour, we also got a chance to enjoy a fish spa.

The unique thing about this fish spa was that we dipped our feet into the river where the wild fish helped us out with the spa. After finishing our spa and the boat cruise we proceeded towards the moonstone mine.

Sri Lanka is home to a lot of mining, but there is one blue colored moonstone which is found nowhere else in the world. We saw how the stone is mined, how it is crafted and finally prepared. Later on, we had some lunch and then went for some snorkeling in Hikkaduwa; scenic beach in Sri Lanka with lots of water sport activities.

After completing our snorkeling, our taxi took us to Colombo where we were supposed to stay for the night. We reached Colombo at 8pm and checked into the hotel. As our driver for the trip wasn’t available temporarily, the hotel provided us a car that took us to a casino. We returned from the casino after a few hours and retired for the night.

Day 5: Colombo

  • Madu river backwater in Sri Lanka
  • Coastal view while traveling to Colombo
  • Elephants greeting tourists in Pinnawala
  • Enjoy the cool breeze in the Madu River
  • memories from a fantastic trip to Sri Lanka
  • fantastic buddha statue near kandy
  • taking the auto rickshaw out for a drive in Colombo
  • domestic animals at a farm near Nuwara Eliya

Our final day in Sri Lanka began slowly. We woke up around 9 am, took our own sweet time with everything and had breakfast at around 11am. I guess all the traveling over the past 4 days had taken a toll on our bodies. After breakfast, we decided to explore the city on our own by taking a walk on the streets of Colombo.

Later in the evening, our driver for the trip came back and took us for a tour of Colombo. We visited a number of monuments and temples during the tour including the famous Gangarama Temple. As our tour concluded we headed back to the hotel for the night.

Day 6: Departure

Catching the sunset in Bentota

We got up early morning for our flight back to Chennai. We checked out of the hotel and our taxi dropped us to the airport as we said goodbye to the wonderful country of Sri Lanka.

I think the decision to go to Sri Lanka turned out to be an amazing choice. Rarely have I witnessed such peace and tranquility on a vacation, as I have witnessed in Sri Lanka. The country is a hidden gem for tourists looking for places filled with adventure and natural beauty around India.
