Day 1

The public transportation around Tasmania is not the best which is why it is quite necessary to plan ahead of time. Upon reaching Tasmania, you need to get your permit and registration done which is quite an easy process. The starting point of the trek has a gear store for your aid where you can pick up items that you possibly could have forgotten. They provide you with a transport to the shores of Dove where you can have your lunch before starting the trek. From there, the trek starts and you ascent to the Motions and keep walking till you reach the Kitchen Hut. From there, you can climb up the Cradle Mountain to get an amazing view of the entire area around you. Click some pictures as well.

Day 2

The next day is when the trekkers set off to the Barn Bluff which is around a 7 km round trip from the campsite near the Kitchen Hut. The climb to that specific cliff is considered comparatively a lot easier than climbing the Cradle Mountain. If possible, travel in groups or even make friends with the other trekkers around for an even amazing experience. Reaching the top, you will be greeted with an alpine region with a view of some of the stunning lakes around. After a quick lunch, you need to set off on the Overland track self guided tour to reach the overnight destination of Windermere Lake. You can witness Platypus or wombats there.

Day 3

The third day is when you cross along the trails of the Windermere Hut and cross the alpine vegetation around. The entire trail is through the wilderness which does make you cross dense rainforest, moorlands and even just the forested area. You get to stay around in the hut around the Mount Oakley which adds to the overall experience of the place even further. If possible, go out for a walk around in the Old Pelion Hut and make sure to stop for lunch and get your recharged for the next destination.

Day 4

The next part of the trekking scene is to climb the majestic Mount Ossa which is the highest mountain in Tasmania. Given the fact that the climb is not at all easy, it is necessary that the weather at least is favourable to avoid any kind of mishap or difficulty. This is one of the hardest part of the trek because the entire route is jagged and forest all around, making the trek adventurous but risky at the same time. The mild gap between the Mount Ossa and Mount Dorris is yet another milestone in the trek. Reaching the summit is a matter of joy because the beauty from the top is nothing but indescribable. The descent is quite easy crossing the Pelian gap and then to the Kia Ora Hut.

Day 5

Upon waking up the fifth day, bask in the beauty of the Cathedral Mountain and the Du Cain range that sits atop the area. From there, you can make a quick stop at the Du Cains Hut and then move forth to the Hartnett falls and witness the gushing waterfalls. You can witness wombats and other animals around the place, only if you are lucky with wildlife spotting. From there, a easy 20 minutes of walking takes you to the Bert Nicholas Hut which provides with a scenic beauty of the nearby Acropolis mountain.

Day 6

The sixth day is one of the most monumental days in the entire trek. Make a quick detour and visit the Pine Valley from where you can set off to climb the popular Acropolis mountain. The mountain is quite a steep climb with a fairly flat ridge line that does accompany the entire trek to the top. Majority of the trekkers who climb the Acropolis have time and time mentioned that the climb is nothing like what you might have experienced before. It is not that difficult as many make it out to be and reaching the summit awards you with the most beautiful view you can ever imagine of. From there, you again need to descent back to the Pine Valley.

Day 7

This is the day that majority of the trekkers like to take a break and chill around. The Narcissus Hut is around 8-9 kms away from the Pine Valley and is an amazing spot to chill around in. If you want some peace and quiet the Echo Point Hut which is located near the Lake St. Clair is also an amazing spot to be in. There can be a wide number of wildlife spotting around which further makes it one of the best spots to spend the penultimate day in.

Day 8

The eighth and the last day of the hike is when you start off the day with a lazy breakfast and enjoy your day hiking back to the initial spot from where you started off. The trek back is not that tough and you can even find a number of other trekkers on the same route.

Cost For Overland Track Treks

As mentioned before, for the overall 8 days of hike, the Overland track cost quite a lot. In general terms, the park entry fees is $200 and the accessory food and transport expenses depend on the trekker. On an average, the entire trek costs around $500-$600 per person.

Since the trek takes a few days to conquer, it becomes strenuous at times. If you book any local tour agency, then you can complete the Salkantay trek in 5 days and 4 nights. Although the route of trekking may vary from tour agency to agency, but here we will discuss the most common route used by official touring companies in the region.

Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Salkantay Pampa

Beautiful Place

Most of the tours to the Salkantay Mountain start by departing on a private car or a bus from Cusco city up to Mollepata where you will stop for breakfast. Although trekking can be started from Mollepata town but most tour agencies don’t prefer this, as it lengthens the duration of the trek and also the beginning part of the trail in Mollapeta region is not that pleasant to traverse.

After having breakfast you will be moving to Sayapata where you will meet the trek support team and horsemen. The trek begins here and climbs up towards Soraypampa and from here you will start getting the first beautiful views of the Apurimac River valley and the Salkantay Mountain.

The trek to Soraypampa takes about 3 to 4 hours and once you reach there, you will most likely have your lunch. Although some hikers prefer to camp here for the night, but mostly people continue on for about another 2 to 3 hrs. before you reach a campsite at Salkantay Pampa. The trek continues on from Salkantay Pampa to Soyrococha and it starts to become steeper from this point on and it becomes even more difficult after about an hour of trekking. The trial in addition to being steeper, begins to zig zag, which continues for a while before getting steeper again. From the top of the Culebras switchback you will begin to notice that the temperature starts to cool and it is here onwards, you will start getting some spectacular views of Salkantay Range. From Soyrococha it takes about an hour to reach Salkantay Pass and once you reach the top of the pass, you will be mesmerized totally at the breathtaking vistas surrounding this place.

From this point on you will begin to descend for about 2 to 3 hours before stopping at Huaramachay for lunch, some tour agencies camp here overnight but most prefer to descend further for about 3 hours up to Colpapampa. At the end of your day 2 of trekking, you will notice a significant change in the surroundings, from high mountain tops to lush green tropical forests.

The Narrows Trek Trail

Narrows Trek Trail View

This is easily one of the most unique as well as iconic hiking trail throughout the world owing to the stunning scenery, easy to access and the the trail being a river. The trail head can be reached by taking the free shuttle from the visitor center which is roughly a 45 min ride through 9 number of stops.

Take the Riverside Walk, it is a paved and a mile long walk. The stroll takes you through some natural beauty by the Virgin River. This section is easy and everyone can attempt it. The stroll ends at a rocky beach where the hike starts and you begin wading the waters from here.

After wading in the canyon for about half a mile you reach the Mystery Falls. The water here can be seen flowing down the right side of the wall of the canyon. Some people and children turn back from here as it becomes tiring to wade upstream and one needs to be constantly search for footing. After the Mystery Falls comes the Wall Street, located a mile upstream of the Mystery Falls. The canyon gets closer and tighter from here on and that really amps up the ‘wow’ factor. Orderville Canyon comes on the right and from here you can choose to detour up for about half a mile and reach Veiled Falls where the National Park Service post tells you to head back.

The junction of the rivers at Orderville Canyon further takes you up the Virgin river for about 2.5 miles through Wall Street till you reach the Big Spring. This is where the day hikers usually turn around and head back.

If you wish to hike the entire 16 miles of the Canyon then previously you would need a permit and start from the top but unfortunately as of 25th August 2018 it has become inaccessible as the route passes through a private land and the landowner didn’t grant permission for public access. The Zion National Park has said that they are trying to resolve the issue.

The hike further ahead is a strenuous option if you wish to complete it in a single day. It is suitable for agile hikers and is best done in September as the days are longer. It takes about 10 to 14 hours for most athletes. On permit the maximum group size is of 12 people and starts at Chamberlain’s Ranch.

The only disadvantage is the weight of the overnight gear if you are planning the full hike. As the experience of the Narrows would be incomplete without completing it. There are 12 designated sites for sleeping, a night under the stars in this magnificent canyon is a great experience. Hike for 6 to 8 hours each day and save time to explore the Deep and Kolob Creeks on the first day and checkout the Orderville Gulch on the second day.

Useful Tips For The Narrows Trek

  • Hiking against the current isn’t that easy so make sure you have proper footwear.
  • There is no out here except at the trail head so if you are tired or if there is a flash flood then you will have to go back from where you came. You can check for flash floods in the weather report.
  • There are nice toilets at the Temple of Sinawava and as there are no secluded spot in the Canyon make sure to use the toilet before the hike.
  • Carry moleskine with you as because after hours of wading and hiking with the wet shoes and clothes the skin tends to be at great risk as because it stays under pressure while wet.
  • Carry water and snacks.
  • Carry the necessary gear and you can rent as well for $25.
  • Use a stick for hiking as it will help you to be sure footed in the water.
