We’ve been dating for past 10 years & ever since we got married in January 2017, I and my wife have not been able to spend some quality time with each other. We’re yet to go on our honeymoon and while the process of planning is still on, we both thought why not take a short trip to Kerala. And as they say, rest is history.

traveler on a trip to Kerala

Since we both are animal lovers, we wanted to go to a place which is a mix of nature & wildlife, and what else can be better than a trip to Kerala. The main reason we picked Kerala is because we wanted to explore the Elephant Junction in Kerala. During the time we were looking for suitable Kerala tour packages, one of my friends who recently booked a trip to Kerala through TravelTriangle recommended the same to us too.

Being ardent backpackers, we put in a request on TravelTriangle without getting skeptical any further. With everything being taken care of in such an organized manner, we were super excited to getaway to God’s own country.

Enroute Munnar the driver took us to some famous sites like that of the Cheeyappara waterfalls and Valara waterfalls. Though the weather drained the energy out of us, the lush greens, dense forests, and the cascading waters, were a treat to watch that left us refreshed.

We reached our hotel by 5pm in the evening and as soon as we reached, we went to explore the river that flows right behind the hotel. It is due to this river that the hotel got its name of Rivertree. We sat there and spent some quiet time while we admired the nature.

On our way back to the hotel, we went to the Paprika Cafe and the best part is the way they garnish their dishes. Even if it’s a cup of tea, they decorate it in such a way that it leaves one astonished.

We started our second day by 7.30am and we finished our breakfast soon after that. Another thing which I would like to highlight about Munnar is the weather. Though it was hot as hell in the afternoon, one does not need an A/C by the evening.

Kissing Kochi A Goodbye!

Next day morning, we reached back to the port by 10.30 am and our driver Biju was there to pick us up. Since our flight was at 9pm, Biju took us to the Kochi Traditional Museum also known as Kerala Folklore Museum. My wife picked some nice souvenirs and I shopped for few “God’s own country” tees.

From there we went to Asia’s largest, Lulu Mall as per Google and our driver Biju. It’s a huge mall and we could finally lay our hands on some nice sizzlers and drinks. Hypermarket was quite fascinating as it had one room dedicated to one particular thing.

For example, if you want apples, you can find all kinds of apples in one room and the same applies to vegetables, fruits, seafood, and almost everything. Then on the way to airport we picked up some banana chips, and snacks.

By 7.30 pm we checked in to the airport and we set on our journey back to Hyderabad. We lived the best of 4 days during this trip to Kerala and to sum up our journey in one word, it was a “refreshing” one. Would love to come back to this beautiful place, but in a better season.

Tips For Future Travelers

  • The place is beautiful which can be explored in a much better way with good planning.
  • Summer season is not the right season at all to visit Munnar, Thekkady, & Alleppey.
  • Opt for any houseboat other than the standard ones for better cruising experience.
  • Ask your drivers to help you out in locating good North Indian restaurants as there are not many around.
  • You can easily walk downhill but walking uphill will drain the energy out of you. So make sure you’re fit enough if you want to explore the place on foot.

Few Other Monetary Tips

Best Things To Do On A Solo Trip To Vietnam And Cambodia

After having visited several countries in the past few years, I decided to visit Vietnam and Cambodia in the month of February-March 2017. I wanted to try out something different this time and hence was actually looking for some Guide/Agency who could give me good travel related information of my intended travel destinations.

Lo and Behold, I found “Travel Triangle” (online travel marketplace) to do this piece of work for me. They were “up and about” in taking this up for me and after understanding my requirements, they were quick to respond by putting me through to a Vietnam Tour Company to take on this task. Since I had already gone through a lot of information of my proposed trip, so, after a swift and heavy exchange of information between the Vietnam Tour company and me on WhatsApp, I was able to finalize my trip within a week.

This was a trip aimed at visiting North, Central, and South Vietnam and the important touristic spots of Cambodia. And it went as per the plan and very well.

My Vietnam And Cambodia Package Details:

Duration: 13 Nights and 14 Days

Cost: INR 212649 or 3295 dollars

Inclusions: Flights, Transfers, Hotels, Cruise, Meals, and Sightseeing

Exclusions: Personal expenses and anything not mentioned in the itinerary

Day 1 – 2: Hello Hanoi, you beauty!

So I set off for Hanoi via Bangkok where I was well received by representatives of my Tour Company at Noi Bai airport, Hanoi.

Hanoi – (Capital of Vietnam)

It’s a crowded city with very narrow streets and lanes except for the stretch from the airport to the city which has wide roads and open spaces. Nonetheless, it retains its style and grace which I could feel in its old world charm and some of the most striking colonial architecture. There are innumerable lakes and parks where one can go and chill as the surroundings make a good relaxing atmosphere. One can also find the streets dotted with many eateries serving local cuisine and shops where you can bargain and get products at a price you desire. The people, too, are extremely friendly but during the evening, one can find huge traffic jams on the streets.

At Hanoi, I visited:

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum – It is the final resting place of the great Vietnamese leader, popularly called Uncle Ho. The body is kept in an air-conditioned glass casket donning his military uniform and a Military Guard protects the former leader. The Mausoleum is surrounded by very well kept gardens and manicured lawns which is so very pleasing to the eye. He was such a popular leader that hordes of visitors visit the Mausoleum to pay their respect.

President Ho Chi Minh’s stilt House – A modest house where he lived from 1958 to 1969.

Ho Chi Minh Museum – The museum has enormous information of this very tall leader.

I also visited the One Pillar Pagoda, the Temple of Literature, the Museum of Ethnology, and the Hoan Kiem Lake.

Overall, the day went very well. I was thoroughly enjoying my time in this wonderful city.

Day 2: Halong Bay – The cruise of a lifetime!

After finishing some of the above-mentioned sightseeing, I proceeded on for a 4 hours bus journey to Halong Bay and later embarked on the LaFairy Sails for a magnificent cruise in the picturesque Halong Bay which has over a thousand extraordinarily shaped limestone islands. The ship explored the Lom Bo area and we had a halt at Me Cung Cave, which is an extremely beautiful (if you climb to the top you get to see a panoramic view of the bay).

Then, there was a sunset party on the top deck of the ship and I got to witness a fruit carving demonstration. The ship had very cozy cabins where we spent the night after a sumptuous barbecue dinner.

Day 3 – 4: Hue – Having a closer look at the local life!

Next day, I boarded a flight to Hue, which was once the feudal capital from 1802 to 1945.

Hue

It’s a small and quiet city known for its magnificent architecture, pagodas, and royal tombs. I visited the Minh Mang Tomb, Khai Dinh Tomb, Tu Duc Tomb, The Citadel, and also the Conical Hat, and Incense Making Villages. Next day I drove for about 5 hours to Hoi An via Danang. On the way, we stopped at Lang Co Beach and then the winding road took me up to the spectacular Hai Van pass which is perched up in the mountains abutting the sea coast, it is thronged with tourists. The temperature here suddenly plummeted to 8 degrees and I made a quick getaway.

marble market shopping market

Then we drove to visit the Marble Mountains whose peak represents the 5 elements of the universe. By this time the sun was right above us and hitting hard. So, I purchased a ticket and started climbing the “Marble Mountain”. It’s a steep climb and it takes 45 minutes to reach the cave which is at the highest point. As I walked along with other tourists, who were mainly Scandinavians and Canadians, it reminded me of the oft-repeated saying as you ascend into the mountains – ” 4×4 laga de jhoor”. The humidity takes a heavy toll on climbers and it was glaringly on display today. We also visited a marble factory en route where finished products were on display. There were marble, Onyx, Crystal, and Amethyst products which are exported worldwide. We continued our drive and passed Danang, which is a very tidy city with a good mix of the old and new. There were skyscrapers hugging the coastline and then there were boulevards, lovely beaches, and beautiful roads. Fantastic! We reached Hoi An in the evening.

Day 5 – 6: Hoi An – Hand in hand with history!

Hoi An

I spent the night at a very good riverside resort and next morning, we set off to My Son, the holy land of the mighty Champa kingdom, constructed between the 4th and 14th century AD. It is a UNESCO heritage site and was found in the 18th century in a very thick forested area. To reach it, one has to walk for about 2 hours. On the way, one can also see bomb craters caused by the bombing by US B 52 bombers on Viet Minh soldiers who were hiding there during the 1968 Vietnam War. The temple has many carvings of Shiva, Parvathi, Vishnu, Brahma, and Ganesha. It’s a must see, if anyone is coming to this part of the world. The next day was spent at Hoi An, a vibrant, colourful, and bustling township where you can party past midnight. It’s one of the best markets I have been to as far as entertainment, partying, and shopping is concerned. The best part is that the crowd, both the young and the not so young, carry themselves so majestically in their best attire as if they are dressed to kill. Later, I took out some spare time in the evening and attended a Vietnamese Cooking demonstration at a very colourful market area of Hoi and worked on 6 exotic dishes (quite an experience!).

Having done North & Central Vietnam inadequate details and having made so many new friends, rebuildVietnamese, and other foreign tourists, it was time to say goodbye to all of them and leave for Hoi An for Danang Airport after an early start at 6 AM next day. My next destination was Saigon in South Vietnam, now called Ho Chi Minh city.

Ho Chi Minh City

The city is still called Saigon by many locals. It is the center of commerce, finance, culture, and tourism in Vietnam. This bustling metropolis, a contradiction of its northern counterpart Hanoi, is crowded with bicycles and motorbikes. A city tour took us to the Reunification Palace, which was the former residence of the President of South Vietnam until April 1975. Close to the palace are French colonial structures including Notre Dame Cathedral and the old Saigon Post Office. After visiting the Jade Emperor Pagoda and the War Remnants Museum we went to Ben Thanh Market to witness the local life.

Next day we left the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City and drove for My Tho, which lies on the left side of the Mekong River. We then boarded a sampan and cruised down the river around the four beautiful islands known as Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix, and Tortoise islands. We stopped over at Unicorn Island, and walked around its country lanes, enjoying orchards, tropical fruits, and folk song music, which was being performed by the local people. We visited the fruit plantation and then riding a hand-rowed sampan through Thoi Son canal, we treated ourselves to the beauty of the countryside, where we visited the family businesses, a honeybee farm, and enjoyed honey tea and even got to see the coconut candy workshop. In the afternoon, post lunch, we cycled around the Tan Thach village, met the local villagers to experience the local daily life in the Mekong delta. For people who could not go on the cycling trip, there were hammocks arranged for resting in the cool breeze. Later on our way back to the Ho Chi Minh City, we visited the Lacquer Painting Factory which is about 12kmms out of Ho Chi Minh City. The skills that these artists possess are breathtaking.

We also visited the “Vietnam War Remnants” Museum at Ho Chi Minh City. What is most revealing here is the amount of destruction and devastation that was caused by the US during the Vietnam war of the late 60s, early 70’s, which has left stains all over Vietnam.

“Hats off to the Vietnamese people who rebuilt their country so brilliantly that I can tell you that it has become one of the best tourist destinations in the world”.

This religion was founded in 1923 and now numbers over 2 million members. Heading out of Ho Chi Minh city, we drove for approximately 200 Kms to Tay Ninh to see the ornate temple of Cao Dai and attend the fantastic mid-day service. The followers of this sect fill the hall wearing colored robes, a symbol of the curious combination of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism.

Day 9 – 10 (Phnom Penh) & Day 11, 12, 13 (Siem Reap)

Next day I took a flight to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. I visited the Jungle covered temple of Ta Prohm, Banteay Kdei, Sra Srong, Ta Leo, Thommanon and Chau Say Tevado. The grand circuit with Preah Khan, Kravan, Neak Pean, Krol Ko, Ta Som, East Mebon and Pre Rup Temples and concluded it with a steep climb up a forested hill up to Bakheng Hill which gave me a spectacular view of all the sandstone monuments of Siem Reap way down below (indeed a spectacular sunset scene) where I could also catch a glimpse of fishermen at work. From the Mekong Delta, I also visited the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, and Wat Phnom. The city lies at the confluence of 3 rivers, Siem Reap, Mekong, and Tonle Sap.

tour of the angkor wat temple

angkor wat temple tour

I also visited the famous Angkor Wat temple which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple is breathtaking and you just cannot take your eyes off it as it is simply stunning. Angkor was the capital of Khmer Empire from 802 AD to 1350 AD and the temple was built in the 13th century. It has Hindu God’s engraved/etched all over. There is Shiva, Parvati, Ganesh, Arjun, Ram, Bramha, Hanuman, and Ravan at so many places and the Shivalinga almost at every entrance. The story of Ramayana and Mahabharata is also shown very neatly on the walls. Buddhism replaced Hinduism sometime the 14th century and Buddha statues replaced many Hindu God’s. If you are physicality fit, get ready to walk for 4 hours, climb about 100 steep steps up and down under the blazing sun for the temple experience us surely worth it. I also visited all its important adjoining places namely, Bayon Temple, Royal Enclosures, Phimesnakas, Elephant Terrace, and Terrace of the Leper King.

Witnessing The Best Of Mountains On A Retreat In Dhanaulti

Pankaj and his family went on a delightful weekend getaway to Dhanaulti. The weather was at its charming best, as they enjoyed their camping retreat surrounded by scenic nature. A memorable trip to be remembered by the precious family time they spent at a lovely getaway in the hills.

Trip Cost: INR 3,499 on quad sharing basis

Trip Duration: 1 night/2 days

Travelers: 4 adults, 1 child

Month of Travel: April 2017

Inclusions: Return bus ticket, accommodation, meals, and adventure activities

Exclusions: Entrance, and return journey dinner

My family is filled with people who’ve loved traveling since their younger years, and so keeping with the tradition, we make sure we take atleast 4-5 short vacations in a year. My wife started searching for weekend destinations on the internet when she got to know about TravelTriangle on Facebook. We really liked the TravelTriangle weekend getaways section, and their package to Dhanaulti felt like value for money.

Our reason for choosing Dhanaulti was that we had never been there before and only traveled till Mussoorie (which was only 25 km from Dhanaulti). It looked like a hill station that would be away from the crowds that flock in from the big cities.

Our trip began at Akshardham, where we assembled at 10 pm to board our bus to Dhanaulti. There was a bit of anxiety in our family as this was our first time on a group tour. However, the coordinator (Javaid) from TravelTriangle created such an environment that all the travelers mingled with each other and got comfortable within the group.

Day 1: Relaxing at a secluded nature retreat

After a comfortable night journey, we arrived in Dhanaulti and checked into Campo Royale at 9 am. I really liked the location of Campo Royale, which is situated two kilometers off the main highway and is accessible via a dirt road. Needless to say, reaching this place in itself was kind of a short trek which we really enjoyed.

Having been allotted our tent, we settled in and had breakfast. Later on, we were scheduled for some adventure activities within the camp premises like Burma Bridge, and Flying Fox. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed these activities along with our fellow travelers. However, all this physical exertion, compounded with last night’s tiredness, took a toll on us and we had to take a compulsory nap to get rid of our tiredness.

By the time we woke up, it was already cloudy and the temperature had already gone down by a few degrees. Given the fact, that we were from Delhi, it wasn’t that hard to please us people that were facing the brutal summer heat.

“Just take us to a beautiful retreat like Dhanaulti in nice weather and we’ll be singing your praises for months.”

As it started to drizzle, we enjoyed the evening with a cup of tea and thought about how going via a booked package to Dhanaulti with TravelTriangle was a great idea. Their coordinators handled all the requirements like food, accommodation, and other basic amenities. And had we come here on our own, where there are no mall roads, bustling markets, or fancy restaurants, the experience would’ve been very annoying.

In the evening, as scheduled, we were supposed to visit the Eco Park but couldn’t do so since it was closed due to heavy rains. Later on, a bonfire and dinner was scheduled and it was a great experience The arrangement done for snacks and DJ was really good and sitting by the bonfire at night gave us the opportunity to interact and get to know our fellow travelers.

Day 2: A short sightseeing visit to divine Haridwar

We checked out of Campo Royale at 10 am from Dhanaulti and headed towards New Delhi. At the request of the travelers, we took a short detour and stopped by at Haridwar to do some sightseeing at the Harkipauri Ghat. What better way to end our trip, than by taking a dip in the Ganga river at one of the most holiest Hindu pilgrimage places. Afterwards, we continued our journey back home and arrived in New Delhi at 10 pm to conclude our trip to Dhanaulti.

We absolutely loved the timing of this vacation. A much needed break for my wife and I, as we were mentally exhausted over the past few weeks. Dhanaulti is a very secluded hill station and a getaway in every sense of the word. The weather was mild and windy, and a big relief from the Delhi heat. After this, I would love to take a longer trip with TravelTriangle in the upcoming months as my son’s summer vacation is about to begin. It will allow us to go out and explore places in the Himalayas for a longer duration.

High points:

  • My six year-old son enjoyed and completed all the adventure activities in the camp which all the adults where doing. It was one of my proud dad moments I would take back from the weekend trip to Dhanaulti.

Tips to travelers:

  • Travelers going to Dhanaulti should definitely consider booking a package instead of going without a planned itinerary.

We took our flight from Delhi and reached Dubai under 4 hours. It was a smooth flight and upon our arrival at the Dubai airport, we were greeted by a representative from the travel agent’s side who helped us with our transfer to the hotel.

Dubai at first glance appeared exciting and we were truly in awe with its grand modern appeal and old world excellent hospitality. Post our breakfast at the hotel, we rested for a while before heading out for the awesome Dubai Dhow Cruise.

The two-hour cruise experience was a delightful one and our boat passed by a lot of important and beautiful buildings of Dubai. The buffet dinner and drinks were sumptuous and there were a lot of entertainment options onboard including a magic show – in which my husband and I were chosen as volunteers. Overall, we loved the whole cruise experience since it was very romantic!

Day 2: Snow Park, Dubai Aquarium & a whole lotta fun!

Today, after a delicious breakfast at the hotel, we visited the famous Mall of Emirates, and boy, it was grand! Here, we had a great time at the Snow Park – an indoor snow resort where one can ski, play, and even meet its newest residents – the penguins. Needless to say, the experience was too good to be true!

Post the park visit, we visited the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo which are located in The Dubai Mall. Both of these places were surreal and seeing the marine life so close, certainly had an enchanting effect on us.

We visited the Ferrari World – the Ferrari theme park which was absolutely amazing! The whole place was basked in the iconic Ferrari red color and had 20 Ferrari inspired rides including the world’s fastest one – which took our breath away! There was the largest Ferrari Store in the world here and a Ferrari boutique too.

Overall, it was a very exciting day for us.

We did the Dubai Desert Safari today and it was an out of the world experience. The safari included Dune Bashing in a 4×4 Land Cruiser and it was the most adrenaline pumping experience ever. We also stopped by at the sunset point in the desert and later proceeded to the desert camp for a lavish Arabic buffet. There were many activities here including henna painting, Tanura dance, and belly dancing. Out of these, belly dancing was the most entertaining.

Day 6: Goodbye Dubai

This was our last day and we mostly did shopping today and roamed around on our own. We visited the gold souk and brought quite a lot of items. In the evening, we checked out of our hotel for our flight back to India.
